Critique night reminder

Please be reminded of our February meeting next Tuesday, Feb 12 at Langstaff Community Centre. It will be critique night with Susan Chater.

 

Each member can submit a maximum of  2 paintings for critique. 

 

DO NOT bring any paintings you wish to submit for jury at the upcoming Luminosity Show at McKay Gallery as a critique from a professional artist would cause your painting to be disqualified.  Suggestions given for the critique would be considered the same category as attending a workshop or class and being assisted by professional artist/teacher.

(A selection of paintings will also be exhibited at The Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts immediately following the McKay Exhibition from May 6- May 31)

Juror: Bianka Guna CSPWC, SCA, TWS, OSA, IGA, CARFAC

 Bianka Guna is a non-objective painter, an honors graduate illustrator from Minneapolis MN, US program, and beloved art teacher for a multitude of art groups and community centres in Ontario, Canada. She teaches watermedia (watercolour, acrylic, mixed media and collage) non-objective painting classes for adults, at the Toronto Koffler Art Centre, in her studio in the Distillery District Toronto or on situ for corporate companies. Bianka trained as an illustrator and has also painted landscapes, figures, portraits and still life in a variety of media.

An elected member of various prestigious art societies in Canada like CSPWC, SCA, TWS, OSA, IGA, CARFAC she has won several juried exhibitions in Canada and abroad and has participated in numerous group and solo shows. She has served as juror for several art competitions in Canada and abroad. Her distinctive contemporary work was purchased by private and corporate collectors in Canada, USA, Sweden, France, China, Australia, Romania, Israel, Russia, South Africa and the UK.

 Reception and Award presentation Saturday, May 4, 4-6pm at the Mckay Art Centre

There will be awards for Best in show and Reserve Best in show. There will also be a portrait and figurative award, a landscape award, a still life award, a floral award, an abstract/ experimental award, an award for small paintings and an encouragement award. More details on the awards will follow once sponsorship has been finalised.

Conditions and Rules of Entry:

· The exhibition of original, water based media is open to all members of the Bayview Watercolour Society.

· Entries must be original works of art, entirely the work of the entrant. Digital images, prints, art work produced in a class or workshop, likenesses of other artists’ work including photos, or other published source or reference material not attributable to the artist will not be permitted.

· Entries must have been executed within the last three years and not exhibited in any previous BWS juried show.

· Entries must be framed, matted and have a professional appearance using archival materials in accordance with the BWS show guidelines. The painting must be ready for hanging with wire. No saw tooth hangers are permitted.     Mats, when used, must be white, off white, or neutral in colour and of archival quality. Narrow frames are preferred. 

· All entries must be executed in water-soluble media - transparent or opaque watercolour or acrylic done in either transparent or opaque manner, tempera, casein, inks and dyes, aqueous oils, water soluble pastels, watercolour pencils and gouache.

· Artists may not substitute another work after time of entry, nor withdraw that work once it has been entered. All paintings that are juried in will hang for the duration of the exhibit. Failure to meet any of these conditions will result in disqualification of the entry.

· Entries must be for sale and priced with the intent to sell and at a price that reflects the time taken to produce original artwork (Minimum price $100).  Once entered, the price of your painting cannot be changed. A commission of 20% will be deducted from sales by BWS. Please bear this in mind and the cost of framing when stating your sale price. All paintings will hang for the duration of the exhibit.

· Utmost care will be taken in handling artwork however BWS and/or its representatives will not be responsible for damage or loss from any cause.

· A maximum of 45 paintings will be chosen by the juror to hang in the Luminosity exhibition. Artists who have work that is not accepted must collect their painting(s) between 3:30 and 4pm on Monday April 29 or incur a $25 storage fee. The juror’s decision is final.

· Awards will be judged from the original paintings on the afternoon of Monday April 29. The juror’s decision is final.

·Any painting sold within 30 days after the closing of the exhibit as a result of having been exhibited in the 2013 Luminosity Exhibition at the Mckay gallery or at the Richmond Hill Centre for the performing Arts must pay the exhibition commission of 20% to BWS.

· Permission is assumed by BWS to reproduce accepted artwork for   

 promotional use. Digital images of accepted works will be retained for the BWS archives.

· Please make sure that your 2013-14 membership is renewed early by the March 15 entry deadline to be eligible for entry.

How to Enter:

· Entries must be received by Midnight on Friday March 15 2013. ($15 for the first painting and $5 each for any additional paintings.) No late entries will be accepted.

· Entry is limited to a maximum of three paintings per artist two must be no bigger than 24 x 34 inches outside dimensions of frame or canvas or equivalent square inches. A third can be submitted if the canvas or framed painting is no bigger than 8 by 10 inches.

For each painting please provide:

1. Title

2. Image size (in inches)

3. Frame size (outside dimensions)

4. Medium used watercolour, acrylic or mixed media (if mixed media please specify which variety of media used)

5. Price (both framed price and the price of the painting matted but without frame to sell unframed)

6. Choice of sitting time or if you volunteer to help with hanging. Please indicate 1^st and 2^nd choice from the list below. All artists submitting work/s for jurying must agree to either sit show or help with hanging.  Paintings will not be accepted for show unless one of these duties is fulfilled.

(Your selected painting will need to be delivered to the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts on Monday May 6 at 11:00 am.  Pickup will be Friday May 31 at 10:00 am)                

or b) I do not wish to have a painting exhibited at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts following the McKay exhibition.

Entries will not be accepted until the information for #1-8 is provided.

· BWS reserves the right to refuse, upon arrival, any painting with a damaged frame/canvases or inappropriate hanging system before jurying.

 ·Painting labels and instructions on how to use them will be provided two weeks before the exhibition opens

We will let you know your exact volunteer time by email after April 15 once the sitting schedule has been compiled.

Delivery and collection of paintings: Paintings should be hand delivered to the McKay Art Centre between 12:30 -1:15pm on Monday April 29. You will also be required to pay the appropriate entry fee at this time. (No refunds will be given for paintings not accepted into the exhibition)

Paintings not accepted into the show must be collected between 3:30 and 4pm on Monday April 29.

At the end of the exhibition paintings need to be collected between 5:30-6pm on Sunday May 5.  Any painting not collected will be subject to a $25 per day storage fee made payable to BWS.

Any person with paintings in the exhibition is entitled to submit cards, giclee prints, small gifts or matted original paintings FREE OF CHARGE. An e mail will go out to the artists after March 15 requesting information. All items need to be presented in crystal clear bags or equivalent professional  presentation. Prices need to be clearly labelled on each item.  20% of all sales during the exhibition will be taken by BWS. Items to be displayed in the store must have their pricing and display approved by a BWS executive member by April 15.

First meeting of the year!

Happy New Year to all!

Don't forget our 1st meeting in the New Year will take place next Tuesday Jan 8 at Langstaff Community Centre. Wilf McOstrich will be demonstrating. Its going to be a great evening so Don't miss it!

 Wilf will begin the evening by doing a 10 x 14 snow scene from the Hockley Valley near Shelburne. In this demo he will role play and pretend that he is actually standing in two feet of snow with a temperature hovering near zero... in other words he will work really fast and loose to capture everything before the paint gels and I stiffen like a board.  He willl demonstrate how to capture snow, how to develop depth and the need for vibrant colours to off set the very essence of all that white. Here’s the visual as a handout sheet.

He will then move along to show us how  watercolour board with its Fine surface texture can be used to capture snow in a much more delicate, subtle and moody manner.

Lastly he will then  demo – painting watercolours on canvas. Showing how to use prepared canvas that can be bought at any Dollarama store for under two bucks.

JACKIE GRISLEY SWA-demonstration

I am currently exhibiting with a selected Members SWA show at Picturecraft Gallery in Norfolk. As I was painting for the show I thought it might be of interest for my blog to take pics at significant stages.

CASTLE RUINS

Pic 1 - I’ve completed a simple outline drawing

Pic 2 - to preserve my whites I have masked off with tape and fluid.

Pic 3 - my paint mix using naples yellow, French ultramarine blue, davy’s grey, burnt sienna, perylene violet and ultramarine violet.

Pic 4 - the sky is done. First I wet the paper and used naples yellow, then a very watered down French ultramarine blue to the lower parts which is hardly noticeable but granulated nicely. I mixed naples yellow and davys grey for around the castle and then added a tiny amount of burnt sienna to that mix. Then I strengthened the grey with perylene violet and ultramarine violet, got that down and then added French Ultramarine blue to darken that mix a little more and over painted once more, always leaving some of the original colours exposed. Then I left it to dry. I got a small run back to the right of the castle – I quite liked the way that happened.

Actually I’ve just noticed the sky, unintentionally, looks like a flying dragon hissing fire! 

 

Bianka Guna demo's for BWS this coming Tuesday

Bayview Watercolour's next EXCITING demo will take place on Tuesday November 13 at 7 o'clock in the Program room of the Langstaff Community Centre.
Bianka Guna CSPWC TWS, will be demoing non-objective acrylic painting. 

 Expect to learn more about new acrylic materials, wet- in- wet  techniques, design and  composition, the use of colour, texture, movement and be ready to get inspired . Non- Objective  Acrylic Painting is the perfect way to explore and get challenged. Working with fluid  acrylic is more fun than fun!

Hope to see everyone on Tuesday. Non members are welcome too so come and say hi and learn all about non objective abstract painting.

November Feature Artist Jackie Grisley SWA

Hi everyone and welcome to the beginning of a new month. I would like to introduce to you our feature Artist for this month, Jackie Grisley SWA, and to say thank you to Tony who made the initial contact with Jackie. Welcome to the Waterfront Jackie!

STAIRWAY TO STRUMBLE HEAD

Strumble Head Lighthouse in beautiful Pembrokeshire with its jagged, rocky coastline is so appealing to me and I’ve painted it a few times now. The first time I ever saw it a black storm was developing and as it strengthened the whiteness of the lighthouse against that dark sky was an impressive sight and the vision stays with me. In this painting I have introduced some colour in the sky but my aim was to replicate the image I still have of that first sighting.

I’d like to say thank you so much for inviting me to be your featured ‘artist of the month’, it made my day when I got Tony Cook’s email. I confess I have never done a blog before so I hope I do it justice. I will certainly do my best and am looking forward to conversing and sharing my way of watercolour painting. To kick off with it seems like a good idea to offer an insight into what my goals and inspirations are.

The British coast is what really inspires me to paint. The dramatic skies are my ‘wow’ factor, the stormier and wilder the better. We have such varying weather here which creates ever-changing conditions, especially around the coast or in the mountainous regions such as The Lake District and The Highlands of Scotland. I’ve found watercolour is the perfect medium for achieving the effects I want in my paintings. I love its freedom but also its discipline. Knowing when to stop painting and put down the brush to allow the drying process is crucial and knowing when comes with experience, fight the temptation to keep ‘fiddling’, I’ve spoiled quite a few paintings in my time doing this and have learned to tell myself (out loud occasionally!) to ‘STOP!’. Watercolour has such a unique and magical quality when you do stop painting it keeps on doing its own thing until completely dry. That really excites me-to leave a sky to dry and to come back a few hours later to see how it has developed whilst drying gives me a little thrill.

I aim to achieve mood, drama and atmosphere in each painting and that all comes from the sky for me and how that affects the rest of the painting, deciding on the light direction etc. You may have guessed by now blue skies with fluffy cotton-wool clouds do nothing for me! I try to keep things simple and spontaneous with not too much detail, I seem to achieve more impact this way, and I hope to leave a degree of interpretation for the viewer. Less is more so they say. The use of light against dark is a technique I use frequently to create contrast and bold impact. I like to work wet-in-wet completing the sky in one session, leaving it to completely dry before proceeding. By profession I started out as a graphic designer and I’ve found it’s been very consolidating and useful in regard to composition, expression and balance in my paintings, bringing a sense of right and wrong instinctively.

LAST LIGHT ON THE CROFTERS’ COTTAGES

I was pretty excited with how this sky wash had dried and I think it demonstrates that controlling the wet-in-wet technique cannot be totally mastered. The way the paint continued to dribble into the underlying colour is as we say a ‘happy accident’. It also makes my point of knowing when to put the brush down and let things happen.

I like to use a restricted palette in order to introduce harmony into my paintings, I always want drama but harmony is equally important to me. I use Winsor & Newton, blocks and tubes. My brushes range from Isabey Petit Gris to W & N sables, round and chisel in varying sizes. My paper is always Saunders Waterford and Arches not and rough surfaces 200lb and 300lb. They don’t cockle and are quite forgiving if you need to lift out. Most important to have confidence in your paper, I’ve used others and have been disappointed with the finish.

When I’m travelling for my reference, my latest trip was September to the Lizard Point in Cornwall, I do simple pencil sketches and take my camera everywhere. I have no qualms about using photographic reference, even though it can be frowned upon, it’s a great way to gather plenty of material to work up in my studio. I don’t like working outdoors, there are too many distractions and it doesn’t suit my painting technique. Plus the viewfinder immediately helps with composition. I’m not afraid to move elements around or even leave some out until I feel the scene is balanced.

I am self-taught and as I mentioned my graphic design background has been very useful to my painting development. After this I helped set up a craft based business making model trees for architectural modelmakers. This has also been advantageous, working in scales and perspective in a 3-dimensional way has helped me understand how to achieve these elements within a painting.

In 2006 I was invited to become a Member of The Society of Women Artists and I felt extremely honoured to become a part of such a special and historical Society. To have my work recognised by such a wonderful Society was and is very special to me.

I really only began watercolour painting about 15 years ago and was hooked immediately and my style has evolved and developed the more I’ve painted. Turner’s watercolour skies and seascapes have been a tremendous source of inspiration to me. His imaginative use of paint and reaction to dramatic weather made him so ahead of his time. I look in wonderment at how he achieved those storms out at sea-incredible-oh to paint like that! But that’s what I love about painting there’s always more to strive for, more to improve on and so much to keep learning.

Well that’s a bit about me, I look forward to the month ahead and hope to be able to chat with fellow watercolourists.

NIGHT GUARD

Lismore Lighthouse in Scottish Highlands has a backdrop of impressive mountains and I would imagine for passing ships in the night the lighthouse must do a crucial lifesaving job. So I wanted to paint a night time view of it showing its power and importance for those vulnerable seamen.

Art Cunanan Workshop!

To celebrate World watercolour day Bayview Watercolour Society has arranged an All day workshop with Art Cunanan which will take place on Saturday Nov. 17  9:30 to 3:30pm   in the Program room at the Langstaff Community Center, the corner of Bantry rd. and Red Maple  in Richmond Hill.

The cost is $49 for members and $55 for non-members.
